“This data explorer tool can help policy makers learn more about older people’s needs and their experiences to better plan for the services we need in the future. It looks at individual issues and where multiple disadvantages were affecting older New Zealanders.
“In 2022 Aotearoa New Zealand had 842,000 people aged 65 and older. This number is likely to hit one million by 2028. The proportion of the population aged over 65 is also increasing,” says Deputy Chief Executive, Policy, Data and Insights, Aphra Green.
The data explorer has been developed following work with Te Manatū Whakahiato Ministry for Social Development and Manatū Hauora Ministry of Health to understand the size, scale and characteristics of older people experiencing vulnerability in health, housing, finance, social connection, and access.
The five domains align with the Better Later Life Strategy(external link) and support commitments under the Better Later Life Strategy Action Plan 2021 – 2024 - He Mahere Hohenga.(external link)
Data from the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) was analysed to learn more about experiences of New Zealanders, aged 65 years or older, across these domains.
